BALANCE (for the rider): There are many variables that affect a person’s balance, the main one being at what age and stage of physical development the person was introduced to horses and riding. Generally speaking, the younger a person starts out, the easier it is for them to learn how to balance when they’re horseback. This is just an observation that has many exceptions, depending on what the person is capable of doing with the horse. “Natural” riders are usually people who started young and developed their balance on horseback.

I am one who did not have a childhood with horses. Balance is something I struggle with. Thankfully I have found some good instructors along the way in the past 6 years since I am riding regularly. For the past 3, we work on relaxation, removal of tension, connection with the horse thru feel, mind, breath, bones. My proprioception has improved dramatically and I can make more subtle corrections in me when I get a bit forward or uneven in my weight.
